Our History
Solutions Magazine was founded on March 1, 2004 by a group of Stanford University undergraduates, with seed capital from the Business Association of Stanford Engineering Students (BASES) and YouthVenture. Since then, our network of journalists and advisors has grown to include a wide range of individuals and organizations who share our belief in promoting social entrepreneurship as a way to solve global poverty.
Solutions Magazine started as a class project for the Social Entrepreneurship Collaboratory offered by the Public Policy Department at Stanford University. Founding members include J. Savannah Lengsfelder, Lija McHugh, Faris Mohiuddin, Luis Ochoa, and Tony Wang. (Left: Lija, Faris, Tony, and Luis at the 2004 BASES Awards Ceremony)

In the summer of 2004, Savannah left for Oxford and Luis left for San Francisco. Wilmot Yeh (Far Left) joined us as a graphics designer and Adam Stone (Left) signed up to be Editor-in-Chief.

Lija (Far Left) worked full time with the Public Policy Department and Faris (Left) worked full time with IBM’s Almaden Laboratory, but both continued to help with Solutions Magazine.
I worked full time on Solutions Magazine, using a press pass to attend conferences like AlwaysOn and BlogOn. I even got to interview Martin Fisher at a lunch event put on by Social Fusion and the World Affairs Council (Left). Then the school year came and between classes, extracurriculars, and graduating, none of us had time to work on the magazine. Luckily, Lija McHugh and Adam Stone struck a deal with the Stanford Daily to publish a weekly social innovation column while I worked on designing our website. In the summer of 2005, I finished the website and hopefully the rest is history.
