Proud to be a Jumbo

TuftsYup, you are all done. After four years of all-nighters, naked quad runs and walking up and down the hill, you are all ready to get into the "real world." I'm sure most of you out there are asking yourselves, "What am I going to do with myself now that I'm done with college?" My advice to the class of 2005 is to do what you have been doing for the past four years: be a Tufts Jumbo in the real world.

Giving Credit Where It's Due

TuftsAs the weather gets warmer and while classes come to an end, the big finals push begins and seniors scramble to find jobs, award ceremonies are in abundance. On April 13, twelve recipients of The Presidential Award for Citizenship and Public Service were honored for their commitment to active citizenship, leadership and public service. I thought it would be a fitting end to my column to highlight some of the best examples of social entrepreneurship at Tufts.

The Boston Marathon and School Spirit

TuftsIt is that time of year again: finals are approaching, seniors are scrambling to find answers to the dreaded question, "What are you going to do next year?" and students are beginning to wear their beach flip flops to class.

Paid Volunteering?

TuftsLast Friday, I attended a conference on higher education and community partnerships. The day was meant to bring together faculty, staff, and students from higher education institutions with the communities they serve. In one of the panels I listened to volunteers from successful partnerships talk about their experiences and what various successes and challenges they encountered.

How I Came to Like Ferrets

TuftsIt has been about a month and a half since that dreaded day in February. No it is not what you are thinking: I am not talking about that singles-hated holiday where candy, flower and stuffed animal sales sky rocket. Neither am I talking about that third week in February where America gets a three-day weekend to honor its founding fathers. I'm talking about that day where two furry animals came into my life.

What It Means to Live in America

TuftsEvery Saturday and Sunday morning since the beginning of this semester my alarm clock has shrilled at exactly seven in the morning. Rain or shine, energetic or tired, hung-over or sober, I have committed myself to getting up, putting on a shirt and tie and making the almost hour-long trek from my house to Dorchester, Mass. In Dorchester I teach English to a group of seventeen Vietnamese immigrants all of whom have been in the United States for less than three years.

10 Good Things About You

TuftsThis past weekend on my way back from work in Dorchester, where I teach English, I tried to think of all the different things the average Tufts student can do to become a better member of the Tufts Community. Here's a list of 10 things I came up with:

Who Knows, Who Knows

TuftsThe other day I was having dinner with my friend Lisa, who asked me, "Loi, what are you going to write about in your next column?" It was only Tuesday, and my column had just run, so all I could respond with was, "Who knows, Lisa, who knows." Then it was Saturday and I was stuck with a bigger case of writer's block than the feeling of having to write a final research paper the night before it was due. The interview I had planned to use as the basis of this week's column had been rescheduled, so I was left with a blinking cursor on a blank page of Microsoft Word. And then it came to me, "Loi, why not write about why you are writing a column entitled, 'The Social Entrepreneur?'"

It's All Greek To Me

TuftsLet me start off by saying, I have never been a huge fan of fraternities or sororities at Tufts. When I came as a freshman in the fall of 2002 the fraternity scene was the crux of social life, and frankly I did not enjoy it all that much.

One Good Neighbor

Tufts

After a blizzard resulting in a couple of feet of snow, what do most college students think of? A snow day and a reprieve from classes? Sledding down the President's hill on Dewick trays? Or just getting a couple extra hours of sleep? Well, one innovative thinker came up with something else - shoveling snow for his block. The following is the story of how one student capitalized on the blizzard conditions to do some good for himself and the community.
